Tonight we are painting in the spirit of Raoul Dufy — the French colorist who treated a room the way a composer treats a melody. We are not copying a museum canvas stroke for stroke. We are painting a pink room: warm walls, a window full of light, patterned fabrics, a chair, a table, and that light, dancing line Dufy loved.
Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) has a style that is loose, decorative, and sunny. He painted racecourses, harbors, orchestras — and interiors that feel like someone left the shutters open on a good afternoon. He used color first, drawing second. Lines often sit on top of color instead of boxing it in. Pinks, peaches, turquoise, and cobalt sit next to each other without apology.
